Workshop: We toured the workshop at Echizen Washi Store. We were given an explanation of the history of Echizen Washi and the techniques used in its production. We were able to actually handle the washi paper and works on display, and were able to feel their beautiful appearance, pleasant texture, and warm expression. After the tour, we experienced making original New Year's decorations and flower boxes using Echizen washi paper. The small washi pieces (flowers and leaves) used in the workshop were apparently made by people at a local facility for people with disabilities as part of their work, and it was only by actually going there and experiencing it that we were able to learn about this unexpected connection to the local community.
Speaking of Sabae, glasses come to mind, and we visited the Glasses Museum, which is fitting for a city that has a 90% share of domestically produced glasses. In addition to exhibits that teach the history of glasses and the techniques used to make them, there was also a direct store and an experience workshop. Sabae also holds an open factory event called the Glasses Festival every year, which focuses on glasses, and we had the opportunity to meet with the organizing committee.
